DR. LONNETTA GAINES
Dr. Lonnetta M. Gaines, Vice President of the LMLI met Dr. Monroe in 1985 at the Bank Street College of
Education where they co-taught courses in Educational Administration.
Dr. Gaines worked for twelve years at Bank Street College where she chaired the Educational Leadership Department, directed the Early Childhood Leadership Program,
and taught graduate courses in educational administration, curriculum development, child study, and creative movement in the early childhood curriculum.
An alumna of Fisk University, Bank Street College, and the Union Institute, Dr. Gaines co-founded the Learning House, a childcare center in Atlanta,
Georgia, was Curriculum Director of Patterson Elementary School in Harlem, and founded and directed Education Arts, Inc., a community arts organization in
Louisville, Kentucky.
She has performed nationally and internationally as a professional dancer with the companies of Eleo Pomare, Dianne McIntyre, and George Faison and with
stellar jazz musicians including Bob Cunningham, Marion Brown, and Warren Smith. As a storyteller, Dr. Gaines has performed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art,
the American Museum of Natural History, and at the Wema Centre for Children in Kenya, East Africa.
Dr. Gaines co-authored the Monroe-Gaines Parenting Manual and is also the author of Seven Students Make a Decision, a study habits workbook for
middle school students, Fia and the Butterfly: 7 Stories for Character Education, and Fia's Literacy Pack for Young Scholars, a reading
comprehension and test-taking skills workbook for students grades 4 to 8 with 25 lesson plans for teachers, tutors, and parents. She is the author/producer
of "The Faith Story: How Butterflies Came to Be," a story CD performed by professional actors with stellar jazz musicians. Dr. Gaines' work is available
