Fia and the Butterfly
7 Stories for Character Education

by Dr. Lonnetta M. Taylor-Gaines

Fia and the Butterfly
In this wonderful book for children and those who care for them, you will meet eleven-year-old Fredericka Inez Anderson, an African-American girl who likes to be called Fia. It is the height of the Civil Rights Movement, and Fia is very upset because of the murder – on September 15, 1963 – of four little girls in a church in Birmingham, Alabama. Fia is also worried because her parents have moved to a new city and she has to adjust to a new school and meet new friends.

When Fia falls on the ice after school one day, her imagination transports her to a magical place where she meets a storyteller – Nana Bea -
who tells Fia seven stories that help her to feel better about her problems.

Join Fia in this magical place and experience the adventures of Fia and the Butterfly: 7 Stories for Character Education.

“What an imagination! A marvelous, insightful spirit! What a soul! This book may have been written for children but it has a message for adults who seek the profound child within.”

~ The Rev. C.T. Vivian, Legendary Civil Rights Activist

"This lovely book of allegorical stories is useful to all teachers, parents, and counselors, who are concerned about the development of character in our children and our youth. I recommend it highly."

~ Dr. Lorraine Monroe, Founder and President, The Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute

“The stories are wonderful and they each have an awesome moral. They are really cool.”

~ Seventh Grade Student

The Faith Story:
How Butterflies Came To Be
A read-aloud story with classic jazz music for dreamers of all ages

by Dr. Lonnetta M. Taylor-Gaines

In "THE FAITH STORY" by Dr. Lonnetta M. Taylor-Gaines, you will meet 11-year-old African-American girl, Fredericka Inez Anderson - or Fia, as she likes to be called. Fia has been profoundly affected by the murder of four little girls - Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carol Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley - in a Birmingham,
Alabama church on Sunday morning, September 15th, 1963.

Story teller Nana Bea tells "THE FAITH STORY: how butterflies came to be" to help Fia to address her fears about the murder of the four little girls and to teach her enduring values for life.

"THE FAITH STORY" is the seventh story in my book, Fia and the Butterfly: 7 Stories for Character Education. The aim of the book is to entertain and instruct children, youth, and those who care for them in the principles - or values - that we celebrate during the 7-day cultural holiday of Kwanzaa from December 26th through Janurary 1st of each year. It is my belief that these values, based on the lifeways of traditional Africa, can serve as daily guides as we strive to maintain our faith, to build our communities, and to make things better for future generations.
—Lonnetta M. Taylor-Gaines, Ph.D.

Featuring Dr. Dorothy Carter as Nana Bea and Andrea L. Cosley as Fia. Classic jazz music by Bob Cunningham, Warren Smith, and Bross Townsend. A. Dean Irby, director and narrator.
